After all the good news is that most of the modern poetry contests are legitimate. The profit of bogus competitions doesn’t seem to be very big, so with a bit more caution and common sense you shouldn’t have any problems. However, here are some guidelines on evading poetry fraud:

• Google the name of the contest. If it is a scam there will be some information to support that or there will be none at all.
• Carefully read the terms and conditions.
• Paying to get your winning poem published is not an option.
• It is too good to be true. This saying is invented for a reason.
• Don’t be a lone wolf. Register in various poetry and art websites; get in touch with the community. This way you will build strong relations with close-minded people.
