Observer

Observer Very fast and helpful, the miniature Observer is the Protoss's mobile eye and archive for battles and important events. Also its ability to detect invisible units makes it a vital part of every Protoss's division. The only problem is its lack of defense, but the Protoss race has solved the issue by installing them a cloaking mechanism.

StarCraft 2 WCGCompetitive play with Observer

The Observer is a core unit for every situation, what’s more it is the first unit that should come out for your Robotics. The most important aspect of every competitive play is constant scouting and knowledge of your opponent’s development and army positioning. This little unit does the job. Generally speaking, it is placed near the entrance of the enemy’s base, because that is where most players gather their troops; but in mid to late-games, you should place some on various high grounds for maximum vision. And last, but not least this is the only detector unit in the Protoss army.

VS Terran

The main threat here comes from the Terran’s Banshees and Ghosts, because they are both permanently invisible. A good practice is to keep the first observer in your base, and this way you can stop an eventual Banshee harassment. Always bring an Observer or two with your army, so that you can detect enemy’s Ghosts and Banshees.

VS Protoss

Keep an Observer near your Probes and this way you can prevent a possible Dark Templar harassment. Combine your Observers with a couple of Stalkers with Blink to hunt down the enemy’s detector units.

VS Zerg

The situation here is the same as with the other match-ups, but here you should bring an Observer with your army to detect burrowed Banelings, Infestors, Roaches or even Ultralisks.

Countermeasures

VS Terran

  • Build Turrets around your base.
  • Make a Raven and few Vikings and hunt down the enemy Observer.
  • The Ghost's EMP ability can reveal the Observer for a short time, but its enough to destroy him.

  • Build Spore Crawlers around your base.
  • Fast-morph your Overlords into Overseers.
  • The Fungal Growth ability of the Infestor can reveal the Observer for a short period of time.
  • Some Mutalisks in combination with an Overseer will deal greatly with the Observers.
