High Templar

High Templar These creatures use one of the most impressive psionic powers in the universe. The High Templars have even developed more lethal close combat skills than the mighty Zealots. However, the High Templars prefer to use their mental and psionic potential alone to bring destruction among the enemies of the Protoss. They use their psionic powers and abilities to blast away whole groups of enemy units, instead of focusing them unit by unit.

StarCraft 2 WCGCompetitive play with High Templar

Generally speaking the competitive Protoss player have to choose between two major mid-to-late game styles: either Colossi with Thermal Lances for massive AOE damage or High Templars with Psionic Storm. However, you should keep two things in mid:

  • It is extremely rare to see both Colossi and High Templars on the battlefield
  • The High Templars are warped in with only 50 energy, which is enough for a Feedback, but insufficient for a Psionic Storm.

VS Terran

The High Templars make huge sense in this match-up, because of the popular Marine/Marauder/Medivac strategies. Some properly placed Storms can clear a massive army in 3 or 4 seconds. However, you should be extremely careful, if your opponent goes for Ghosts, and he/she will! The Ghosts’ EMP can completely devastate you Templars, draining energy and shield. But if you manage to Feedback them, you can easily win the fight. Another proper usage is to Feedback the Medivacs.

VS Protoss

The High Templars are not recommended for mirror match-ups, because the units in the Protoss army tend to have more HP compared to their counterparts from the Zerg or Terran. For example, a Psionic Storm deals 80 damage, which is 170% of the Marine’s HP, 100% of the Hydralisk’s and only 50% of the Zealot’s.

VS Zerg

In this match-up, the High Templars are extremely efficient, because the Zerg, generally, relies on massive amount of units to overrun the opponent. This is where the Psionic Storm really kicks in. However you should keep in mind that a single Storm will kill a Hydralisk, because it will regenerate 1 HP during the spell. What’s more, the High Templar successfully counters one of the most popular Zerg strategies, Zerglings/Infestors. A single Templar can kill 2 or 3 Infestors instantly with its Feedback. You can try to bait the enemy with one or two Immortals, and then charge the High Templars.n

Countermeasures

VS Terran

  • Use some Banshees with the Cloak ability and destroy the High Templars, before they even know what is happening.
  • You can use the Ravens’ Seeking Missiles to blast them away.
  • The Ghost with his EMP round ability is perfect against these warriors.

VS Protoss

  • Use units with many health points like the Colossus or the Immortal.
  • Stalkers with researched Blink ability can easily deal with the High Templars.
  • Keep your eyes open for the High Templars, send units without energy against them and don’t place them too close to each other.
  • Send Dark Templars, if the enemy doesn’t have any revealing units and destroy the High Templars.

VS Zerg

  • Attack the High Templars with mass Mutalisk, because the beasts are very mobile and can't be easily targeted with the Psionic Storm.
  • Create lots of Roaches with the vital Tunneling Claws and Gilial Reconstitution abilities. Move them while burrowed, until you have placed them underneath the High Templars and then perform a quick assault.
  • The Infestor can be useful too, thanks to his Mind Control ability. Turn the Templars against their own troops.
