Mutalisk The Mutalisk is the terror of the sky. They are well-known among the Terran for their ability to shred through multiple targets with a single attack. The Mutalisk originated from the creature Mantis Screamer, which was taken by the Swarm and transformed into this flying assassin.

Use of Mutalisk

  • Attacks both air and ground units.
  • The main air unit of the Zerg.
  • The Mutalisk is very good for scouting.
  • It can attack several enemies simultaneously, because of the bounce of his attack.

  • Very strong against Brood Lord, Viking and Void Ray.
  • Weak against Corruptor, Thor and Phoenix.

VS Terran

They are very effective against Terrans, because if the Terran misses your mass Mutalisk build in the beginning of the game, you will win fast. Also they are pretty good in hit-and-run attacks if the Terran has Thors and, of course they are used to destroy Siege Tanks.

VS Protoss

Mutalisks are very effective in this match-up, because the strong Protoss units like Immortal and Colossus attack only ground units and that leaves the air defense in the hands of the Stalkers and Sentries, but they are not good against the Zerg’s flying beasts. With a group of several Mutalisks you can harass the enemy player’s Probes and slow down his development, while you prepare for the final strike.

VS Zerg

The Mutalisks are really used in these matches, because of their attack that can hit air and ground units. In such way they can harass workers or kill Overlords. What happens when both players are massing Mutalisks? Well, in this situation the more upgraded group shall prevail, but there are some must steps in upgrading.

  • Always upgrade the armor first, not the attack.

Don’t forget to always focus-ire too. The Mutalisks can be used together with Overlords, because the Overlord will take some of the bouncing attacks.

 

Countermeasures

 

VS Terran

  • The Thor deals bonus damage to the light armor of the Mutalisk and this, combined with its long ranged attack, devastates the flying horrors.
  • The Ghost’s Snipe skill kills a Mutalisk before it gets a chance to react.
  • Build few Missile Turrets around your base, but be sure to place them well.

VS Protoss

  • The Stalkers do very well against the Mutalisks, if with their Blink ability is researched.
  • The Phoenix deals bonus damage to light armor, which makes it ideal for hunting down enemy Mutalisks.
  • Build few Photon Cannons around your base, but be sure to place them well.

VS Zerg

  • The Hydralisk with the Grooved Spines upgrade is deadly for a Mutalisk.
  • The Corruptor is the perfect Zerg unit in air-to-air combat, so the Mutalisk doesn't stand a chance.
  • Build few Spore Crawlers around your base but be sure to place them well.
